DT Share- Me at Six

My DT Kit for May was full of October Afternoon's Farmhouse range- which definitely made my heart full. I love OA, they are my favourite scrapbook company. One of the features of October Afternoon are their cream base and the often vintage or retro feel. Farmhouse is definitely more on the vintage side which is probably why this months kit had me reaching for some older photos. Like this sweet one of on a swing around 6 years old.

This LO features October Afternoon Farmhouse Papers: Church Social, Clothesline, and Faded Wallpaper and Shape Stickers, Journal cards, Flower Sack, and Little Flyers. Core'dinations Gibraltar cardstock, Kaisercraft Lace Cream, and Resin Blossoms, Basic Grey Serenade Element Stickers.

The Basic Grey Serenade line marries well with this Farmhouse line if you are looking to mix and match papers.

Gallery Pick

Showing a little love today to... Ness74

How great do these colours look together?! I love it and the choice of black and white photos is a great contrast. I love the way that Ness has used lines in her layout with the waves, journal strip and the strips under her photos. Those strips especially add movement and playfulness to highlight what's happening in the photos. Thanks for sharing this lovely page in our gallery Ness.

Design School ~ Balance

Creating Balance on a scrapbook page means making sure the elements on your page feel visually balanced. It's about taking in the size and visual weight of the things happening on your page and ensuring their distribution on your canvas is harmonious.

Visual weight is gauged by the size, colour and complexity of the object- while my rectangle above is much bigger than the circle the blackness 'weighs down it's side of the canvas because of the 'weight' of the black.

When the two objects have the same visual weight the balance shifts to the larger object.

Complexity/interest (like we often see in a photo) also add weight. The objects above are fairly well balanced out the rectangle weighted by it's size and the circle by it's complexity.

Often checking the Balance on our page is about seeing if it 'feels good'. Or visually checking if you feel like it would tip a scale in one direction or other. Your layout may feel top-heavy, or it may be leaning more to one side or the other. Some times we can utilize these features but sometimes it just feels off.

Symmetrical Balance- Creating an axis on our page and make a design that is mostly symmetrical is an easy way to create balance on a page.

Horizontal Axis- top and bottom have the similar visual weight.

Vertical Axis- left and right have the same weight.

Project Life pages are a great example of using symmetry to help provide balance- this one is symmetrical on both the horizontal and vertical access. Although the red card has more weight then the one with the hearts making the page feel a bit lopsided- do you feel that?

Asymmetrical Symmetry

The items on this page aren't symmetrical - but each grouping carries a similar weight and their placement in opposition to each other makes the balance out. The flow from top to bottom on the diagonal also makes this page comfortable to the eye.

The two sections on this page aren't the same size but they balance out for a few reasons- items that are higher on the page have more visual weight. Brighter colours like those in the title carry more weight. Items further away from the centre gain more weight. The top grouping is isolated by white space and more isolated in general which also lends it more weight.

Asymmetrical Balance can be harder to achieve- but often pages with asymmetrical balance have more energy are more visually interesting to the viewer, so it's worth the effort. For some more tips on Asymmetrical Balance this post at Get it Scrapped

To check the balance on your page- ask yourself where your eye goes- is it drawn to an element because it's too large for the page, or too bright, too dark or too complex. If so... can you change that element to something more suited? Or can you add something elsewhere on the LO to balance it out?

Why not have a look at your own pages and see how you have automatically achieved balance? Or find the pages that didn't feel quite right and ask yourself if it's because they are unbalanced?

DT Share - Onslow House

Before I was born my dad's mum was managing a Boarding House for Railway workers in Dunedin, NZ. One of her boarders was my mum's dad... you can join the dots as to how my parents met. :-) That place was Onslow House, built in 1878 and demolished in 1981.

I've used October Afternoon's lovely Farmhouse range for most of this LO- while it can be used for a bunch of different themes I think it works really well with black and white photos and heritage themed layouts.

Supplies used: October Afternoon Farmhouse: Papers: Porch Swing, Attic Trunk, Church Social, Gravel Road. Journal cards, Cardstock Stickers, and Mini Market Alphas.

This page that I made using Donna's Sketch for the May Cybercrop will go alongside the Onslow House page in my album- it gives some history and tells my part of the story of the house. That's me and my Nana up there at Onslow House in 1974. :-)

I ended up spending over 25 hours doing some research online on Onslow House as a result of starting this page. It's amazing the amount of historical information you can find online now. I'm looking forward to writing some posts for my personal blog about the House's history and the characters I found along the way.

I've turned Donna's sketch 180 degrees, and added a hefty block of journalling done on my typewriter. Here's what I used: Cardstock: Core'dinations GibraltaBazzillOctober Afternoon Farmhouse Papers: Attic TrunkGravel RoadClothesline, and 8x8 Paper Pad, Label StickersFlower Sack, and Journal Cards.

Sketchy Fun May Cyber Crop

Hi all,

Welcome to the Cyber crop for May! This month is all about sketches and we have three great ones for you to try your hand at!

Donna's Sketch....
I created this sketch to highlight 1 photo, feel free to turn it around as you wish, as long as the basic design remains.

And here's my take...

Here's a close up of the butterfly I popped off the page...

I've used Fancy Pants Happy Place range,  I love this range so much, the papers are a heavy weight and feel so nice to work with and the new puffy stickers script words and adorable!!
Core'dination Card stock in Dusk and Black     *Tip - Dusk actually comes under the Purple colour group!
Kaisercraft paint in Sea Breeze and White

I've used texture paste, my spellbinder dies, and gold thread to complete this look.  Check our my blog for a closer look.....

 Kathy's Sketch...

 From Page maps
Here's my take on it :)

The papers I used are from the October Afternoon Sidewalks collection and they are SO pretty.
The papers behind the photos are both sides of Hide and Seek.  I would buy a couple of sheets of it because it is so gorgeous and it was one of those times when I really didn't want to cut into the paper.
The yellow paper behind is the B side of Red Light Green Light.
The stickers on the bottom right are all from this collection too.

The "Love" title is made with the wonderful cursive alphabet from the Pink Paislee Hey Kid Elements Stickers.

I have also used some Kraft card and some Core'dinations Kraft Core #11, which is wonderful! I just distressed the edge of it, but I love the look of the kraft and green together.

I also used some lace from the Kaisercraft Natural Lace pack.

Gypsy's Sketch...The sketch I have created is for one photo but could easily adapted by stacking two landscape photos in the photo block and replacing one of the journalling blocks with a smaller photo.

Here's my take on the layout using my May kit which is the lovely October Afternoon Farmhouse line with some little extra thrown in.
Here's what I used: Cardstock: Kraft Chestnut October Afternoon Farmhouse: Papers: Kitchen Cupboard, Attic Trunk, Clothesline, Her Bureau, Journal Cards, OA Sidewalks Miscellany, Basic Grey Serenade Element Stickers, Basic Grey Alphabet Stickers, Kaisermist White, Buttons.

Second May Challenge - Circles

Hi :)  It's Kathy here with the Mystical Scrapbooks second challenge for May.
My challenge is to make Circles a feature of your page.
There are many different ways to incorporate them of course!  But I have used some fun paper and a button.

I used a lot of items from the Pink Paislee Hey Kid range on my page.
The circle paper is called Hula Hoop.  It is actually a diecut paper, which is wonderful because you can change the look of it depending on what colour cardstock you put behind it.  And it adds a bit of extra dimension to the page too.  I cut it down a little so there would be a cardstock border around it also.  I used Core'dinations Aquaduct for my base, but there were many different colours I could have used and they all looked great - just different.

The banner is from the Hey Kid range too. It's part of a set of 9 different Tags, which are all fabulous!
The Love sticker and the alphabet are from the Element Stickers.  I have used these stickers so many times now!  I love the alphabets on it and the fun elements too.

The Hey Kid papers and embellishments are wonderful for both boys and girls.  They're great quality too and I highly recommend them :)

I also added a "button" to the page, to continue the Circle theme.  It's actually a button diecut, not the real thing.  I just cut out a few, glued them together and covered it with Glossy Accents.  It looks pretty good and not as bulky on a page as a real button.

I hope you'll join in with our challenge.

Thanks for dropping by today :)

In with the old: The NOT so quiet cricket

This week for in with the old I've switched it up and I'm cheating a bit. This Butterfly die cut is from the KI Memories Glitter Lace range- and while the butterflies aren't in the mystical store there are a couple of lovely designs- bouquet and heartbeat which I will be using in the coming weeks. But this week I wanted to share this design which would also work well with the Bouquet design.

I've quite simply placed a corner of the glitter lace on an angle on two corners of my base cardstock and glued it in place- then trimmed the excess off . By using two contrasting colours- the white and purple the effect is striking!

In this LO I have printed my journalling on a sheet of cardstock and then trimmed it into strips which I've glued to the page. I've used a fine paintbrush to highlight key words in my journalling with the new Denim Kaisermist. I've finished off my page by inking the corners with Tim Holtz distress ink- I'll share that technique in an upcoming post.

In with the old: This is so cool

For my in with the old LO this week I have used a classic grid style design. This is such a simple way to make a cohesive design and creates obvious homes for all the elements on your page. If  you closely you'll see each square on my pages is linked to at least one of it's neighbours- usually two- in fact you can follow a trail from the top left to the middle covering every square.

I've once again used the KI Sheers, this one is curlz 1. The patterned papers are Fancy Pants Memories Captured Family Album, and Chalked. Cocoa Vanilla Totally rad Top Gear. I've also used Twine, Thickers, as well as pulling some small items from my stash.

DT Share ~ Amazing Tama

I have a confession to make- I love the 'B sides'! The B-side is generally the less 'decorated' side of the patterned paper. The B-sides in this Fancy Pants Memories Captured line- are so lovely. There are some lovely basically plain sheets that have a little variation on tone so you get the appearance of a soft texture. The thing I like about these paper is that they give you options. There's a lot you can do with a plain sheet- this month I decided to stamp some simple swirls in a darker tone of the paper. The lightness and simplicity of it contrasts well with the strong and relatively dark photos.

Supplies used: Bazzill Cardstock, Fancy Pants Memories Captured- Photos, and envelopes. Washi tape, Kaiser Rhinestones, and Distress Ink.
